The archive of the Finnish Heritage Agency manages archival materials accumulated over more than 130 years, forming an integral part of Finland's national cultural heritage. Most of the archival materials originate from 1884, the year the predecessor of the Finnish Heritage Agency, the State Archaeological Commission, was established. The archive also contains some materials that predate this period.
The archived materials are mainly related to the cultural environment and heritage, its maintenance and management and related research. The largest collections pertain to archaeology, the built environment, and ethnology.
The materials in the Finnish Heritage Agency’s Archive Service are organised into the archives of the State Archaeological Commission, the archives of the Finnish Heritage Agency and personal archives. Some of these materials have been digitised and can be accessed directly through the archive service. You can also request non-digitised materials for viewing in the researchers' hall.
Archive materials can be searched using the search form. You can filter your search by specific collections, years, or locations. Most materials have undergone text recognition, enabling content searches within documents. For privacy reasons, some digitised materials are only accessible via customer terminals in the Agency's research hall.
